Mary Schlichting was inspired to write Spider, Spider on the Wall when her own kindergarteners were challenged with spiders coming into their classroom. After many attempts to help them with their fears, she came up with a solution. She taught them that they were the monster and that the spiders were very afraid of them. And it worked!

Mary loves teaching and working with children as well as writing. She lives in San Jose, California, and is working on her second book.

Lydia Francis is a freelance artist, professor of
theatrical design at Gustavus Adolphus College,
and scenic artist at the world-renown Guthrie
Theater. It has been a lifelong dream of hers to
illustrate a children’s book, and she is thrilled to have worked on this project with her Aunt Mary. Having loved books like Charlotte’s Web, Lydia is elated to have worked on her own positive spider story and looks forward to connecting with kids and parents everywhere through her illustrations.
